Visiting Hungary in March: Everything You Need To Know
Hungary in March is cool, increasingly sunny, and quieter than summer. Here’s what to expect from the weather, crowds, prices, and things to do.
March in Hungary is the beginning of spring, but the weather still has a bit of winter mixed in, especially early in the month.
The upside is that you can explore Budapest and the rest of the country before the busier late-spring and summer travel season arrives. This guide covers what Hungary is really like in March—from the weather and crowds to the best things to do before you book.
Our Hungary travel guide can help with the rest of your trip planning.
Hungary Weather in March
March weather in Hungary can change quite a bit from the beginning of the month to the end. Early March can still feel wintry, while late March often starts feeling much more like spring.
- Using Budapest as a good reference, daytime highs rise from around 45°F (7°C) at the beginning of March to approximately 57°F (14°C) by the end.
- Average nighttime lows climb from around 30°F (-1°C) to approximately 40°F (4°C) during the month.
- Cold mornings and occasional freezing temperatures are still possible, especially early in March.
- Surprisingly, March is typically Hungary’s driest month, averaging around 32 mm (1.3 inches) of precipitation and about 9 rainy days.
- Weather can change quickly, so a sunny afternoon may still be followed by a chilly evening.
What this means for your trip:
March is a good month for sightseeing if you don’t mind wearing layers. I’d bring a medium-weight jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and something waterproof.
By late March, you can get some genuinely pleasant afternoons that are great for walking around cities and exploring Hungary’s most beautiful sights.
Hungary Sunrise & Sunset in March
Days get noticeably longer during March. Using Budapest as a reference:
- March begins with approximately 11 hours of daylight.
- Sunrise is around 6:24 a.m. and sunset around 5:28 p.m. at the beginning of the month.
- By the end of March, there are nearly 12 hours and 47 minutes of daylight.
- Hungary changes to daylight saving time late in March, so sunset suddenly shifts later on the clock.
- After the clock change, sunset is around 7:10 p.m. near the end of March.
The extra daylight becomes noticeable quickly, especially during the second half of March. It gives you much more time for walking tours, viewpoints, castles, and day trips before dinner.
March Is Low to Shoulder Season in Hungary
March feels like a transition between Hungary’s winter low season and its busier spring travel season. Budapest remains active year-round, but most of the country is still noticeably quieter than it becomes during late spring and summer. Hungary recorded nearly 1.2 million tourist arrivals in March 2026, compared with nearly 1.9 million in June.
- Demand: Tourism is picking up from winter, but March generally remains manageable.
- Pricing: Hotels can be cheaper than during late spring and the summer peak, although Budapest weekend prices can still vary.
- Crowds: Major Budapest attractions are usually easier to visit than during the busy summer months.
- March 15: Hungary’s National Day can bring celebrations and additional activity, especially around historic locations in Budapest.
- Booking tip: You usually have more flexibility with hotels than during summer, but I would still book ahead if you have a specific Budapest property in mind.
