January In Argentina: Weather, Tourism, & Things To Do

Argentina in January brings summer weather, long days, and peak travel in Patagonia. Here’s what to expect from the weather, crowds, prices, and activities.

January In Argentina: Weather, Tourism, & Things To Do

January falls right in the middle of summer in Argentina because the country is located in the Southern Hemisphere. That means long days, warm weather across much of the country, and some of the best conditions of the year for exploring Patagonia, where summer brings milder temperatures, open hiking trails, and extended daylight.

Argentina is huge, though, so January can mean extreme heat in the north and much cooler conditions in the far south.

This guide covers what Argentina is really like in January—from the weather and crowds to the best things to do before you book.

Argentina Weather in January

January is summer in Argentina, but temperatures vary dramatically depending on where you travel. Northern and central Argentina can be hot and humid, while Patagonia remains much cooler.

  • Buenos Aires: Average highs are around 82°F (28°C) with lows near 69°F (21°C).
  • Mendoza: Expect hotter, drier conditions with highs around 88°F (31°C) and lows near 67°F (19°C).
  • Puerto Iguazú: January is extremely hot and humid, averaging around 90°F (32°C) during the day and 70°F (21°C) at night.
  • El Calafate: Patagonia is considerably cooler, with average highs around 64°F (18°C) and lows around 49°F (9°C).
  • Ushuaia: Even in summer, highs average only about 55°F (13°C) with lows near 43°F (6°C).
  • Thunderstorms and heavier rainfall are possible around Buenos Aires and northern Argentina.
  • Patagonia is generally cooler, windy, and comfortable for hiking, although the weather can change quickly.

What this means for your trip:
What you pack depends heavily on your itinerary. If you’re combining Buenos Aires, Iguazú, and Patagonia, you may need everything from lightweight summer clothes to a waterproof jacket and warm layers.

Argentina Sunrise & Sunset in January

January offers long summer days, particularly as you travel farther south.

  • In Buenos Aires, January begins with roughly 14 hours and 25 minutes of daylight.
  • Sunrise is around 5:45 a.m. and sunset around 8:10 p.m. at the beginning of the month.
  • By January 31, Buenos Aires still receives nearly 13 hours and 48 minutes of daylight.
  • In Ushuaia, the difference is much more dramatic, with more than 17 hours of daylight at the beginning of January.
  • Ushuaia’s sunset can occur after 10:00 p.m. early in the month.

Those long southern days are one of the biggest advantages of visiting Patagonia in January. You have far more daylight for hiking, glacier excursions, scenic drives, and other outdoor activities.

January Is Peak Summer Travel Season in Argentina

January is one of Argentina’s busiest vacation months, although demand varies considerably depending on where you go.

  • Patagonia: January is firmly within peak season, especially around El Calafate, El Chaltén, Bariloche, and other outdoor destinations.
  • Atlantic coast: Beach destinations are extremely popular with Argentinians taking their summer vacations.
  • Buenos Aires: The city can actually feel somewhat quieter as many locals leave on vacation, although international tourism remains active.
  • Pricing: Hotels, domestic flights, and tours can be expensive in Patagonia and popular summer destinations.
  • Availability: Glacier excursions, trekking experiences, rental cars, and desirable Patagonia hotels can sell out.
  • Booking tip: If Patagonia is a major part of your itinerary, I would book accommodations and important excursions several months ahead.
