30-Day Thailand Itinerary: Best Stops and Things To Do

Follow my 30-day Thailand itinerary through Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pai, Koh Tao, Phuket, Krabi, and more, with the best things I did in each stop.

30-Day Thailand Itinerary: Best Stops and Things To Do

A 30-day Thailand itinerary can comfortably cover a wide range of destinations if you are healthy, active, and happy to move on once you have seen the main attractions each place has to offer. It allows you to make the most of your time and see as much as possible.

Thirty days was enough for me to visit 11 different destinations because I planned my route carefully and traveled from one place to the next based on their proximity. That meant less wasted travel time and a smoother overall trip. This itinerary gave me a little bit of everything, which is exactly why it worked so well.

What I liked most about this this itinerary was the variety. One stop was all about temples and city energy. The next was mountain views and slower mornings. Then it shifted into clear water, boat trips, island beaches, and finally one of the best nature stops in the country before ending with old ruins and dramatic coastline.

Itinerary Overview

  • Days 1-3: Bangkok
  • Days 4-6: Chiang Mai
  • Days 7-8: Pai
  • Days 9-11: Koh Tao
  • Days 12-14: Koh Samui
  • Days 15-16: Koh Phangan
  • Days 17-18: Phi Phi Islands
  • Days 19-22: Phuket
  • Days 23-25: Khao Sok National Park
  • Days 26-27: Ayutthaya
  • Days 28-29: Krabi
  • Day 30: Bangkok (Departure)

Bangkok: Days 1-3

Bangkok, Thailand ariel city view and market

Bangkok was a strong way to start this Thailand itinerary because it throws you right into the country at full speed. The city is packed with famous landmarks, street food, river traffic, and neighborhoods that feel completely different from one another. For a first stop, it gave me that instant sense that the trip had really begun.

Activities & Attractions

  • Visited the Grand Palace
  • Explored Wat Pho
  • Shopped at Chatuchak Weekend Market
  • Enjoyed street food in Chinatown
  • Relaxed in Lumphini Park
  • Took a boat tour on the Chao Phraya River

The Grand Palace was one of those places that actually feels as impressive as people say. The colors, the gold details, and the scale of the complex make it one of the easiest places in Bangkok to recommend. Wat Pho was another highlight, especially seeing the Reclining Buddha in person. It feels much bigger and more striking than it does in photos.

Chatuchak Weekend Market was one of the easiest places on the trip to lose track of time. There is so much to look at, so much to eat, and so many corners that pull you in. Chinatown was another favorite because the food scene there is nonstop. It felt busy, smoky, loud, and full of good smells in the best possible way.

Lumphini Park gave me a break from the pace of the city, while the Chao Phraya River boat tour gave me a different view of Bangkok altogether. Seeing the skyline, temples, and daily life from the water made the city feel even bigger.

Chiang Mai: Days 4-6

Chiang Mai Temple an ariel view of the scenery

Chiang Mai felt like a nice shift after Bangkok. It still had plenty going on, but the pace was easier and the city felt more manageable. This was where the trip started to feel less like arrival mode and more like settling into Thailand.

Activities & Attractions

  • Visited Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
  • Explored Old City Temples
  • Shopped at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
  • Took a cooking class
  • Visited an elephant sanctuary
  • Enjoyed a traditional Thai massage

Doi Suthep was one of the most memorable temple visits of the trip. The setting above the city gives it a different feel, and the views from up there help make it more than just another temple stop. The Old City temples were also worth the time because they gave Chiang Mai more depth and made walking around feel rewarding.

The night bazaar was one of the best places to just wander and let the evening happen. Between the stalls, the food, and the overall feel of the place, it was one of those stops that made Chiang Mai easy to enjoy. The cooking class stood out because it was more hands-on than a regular sightseeing stop, and it made me appreciate Thai food even more once I saw how much goes into it.

The elephant sanctuary visit was another big moment. Being around elephants in a more natural setting made that day stick with me. Finishing things off with a Thai massage felt like the right move after a few packed days.

Pai: Days 7-8

Pai, Thailand

Pai felt like a reset. After Bangkok and Chiang Mai, it was nice to get somewhere smaller, slower, and more relaxed. Even though it is quieter, it still had enough to do that it never felt like filler on the route.

Activities & Attractions

  • Hiked Pai Canyon
  • Explored Pai Walking Street
  • Visited Pam Bok Waterfall
  • Relaxed at hot springs
  • Explored the Land Split
  • Visited the White Buddha on the hill

Pai Canyon at sunset was one of the best moments of the stop. The narrow ridges, the drop-offs, and the light at the end of the day made it feel much more dramatic than I expected. It was one of those places where you stop every few minutes just to look around again.

Pai Walking Street gave the town a fun evening side, with food stalls, little shops, and a casual feel that matched Pai well. Pam Bok Waterfall was a good break from the heat, and the hot springs made it easy to slow down and do a little less for a few hours.

The Land Split was one of the more unusual stops on the trip, which made it memorable. Visiting the White Buddha on the hill added one more peaceful stop and one more good view over the valley.

Koh Tao: Days 9-11

Koh Tao, Thailand ariel view of beautiful baeches

Koh Tao is a small island diving paradise, and this is where the trip really started to lean into island time. The water was clear, the beaches were easy to enjoy, and a lot of the best things to do were tied to the ocean. It felt like the kind of place where the days start slipping by fast.

Activities & Attractions

  • Snorkeled at Mango Bay
  • Relaxed on Sairee Beach
  • Explored Chalok Baan Kao Bay
  • Visited Koh Nang Yuan
  • Went scuba diving
  • Enjoyed beachside dining

Mango Bay was one of the best snorkeling stops because the water clarity made it easy to enjoy the marine life without needing much more than a mask and some time in the water. Sairee Beach had more of a social feel, so it worked well for beach time that did not feel too quiet.

Koh Nang Yuan was one of the most visually impressive places around Koh Tao. The sandbar and the color of the water made it feel like one of those classic Thailand scenes people imagine before they go. Trying diving for the first time made Koh Tao even more memorable because it turned the stop into more than just beaches and viewpoints.

Beachside dining ended up being one of the things I liked most there. The light at the end of the day, the sound of the water, and the easy pace of the island made even simple meals feel like part of the experience.

Koh Samui: Days 12-14

Koh Samui Arkbar beach party and sunset

Koh Samui felt more built up than Koh Tao, but it still had enough beach time, scenic stops, and night time beach party energy to keep it fun. It worked well as a stop that mixed downtime with a few more polished island experiences.

Activities & Attractions

  • Relaxed on Chaweng Beach
  • Visited Big Buddha Temple
  • Explored Fisherman’s Village
  • Enjoyed a sunset cruise
  • Tried stand-up paddleboarding
  • Experienced the island's nightlife

Chaweng Beach was an easy place to settle into because it had that classic island feel people come to Thailand for. It was simple, sunny, and easy to enjoy. Big Buddha Temple added a different side of the island and helped break up the beach time with something more grounded.

Fisherman’s Village felt slower and easier to walk than some of the busier parts of Samui. It was a good place to eat, look around, and take your time. The sunset cruise was one of the best experiences there because Samui looked completely different from the water once the light started dropping.

Stand-up paddleboarding added a fun change of pace, and the nightlife gave the island enough energy at night without needing every evening to turn into a huge event.

Koh Phangan: Days 15-16

Koh Phangan, Thailand Full moon party and beach

Koh Phangan gave me two very different sides of the island. One side felt calm and beach-focused. The other was all energy. That contrast is part of what made it such an interesting stop.

Activities & Attractions

  • Relaxed on Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach
  • Got a bamboo tattoo in Haad Rin
  • Attended the Full Moon Party
  • Explored Bottle Beach
  • Went kayaking
  • Enjoyed a beachfront spa treatment

Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach showed a much softer side of Koh Phangan. It was a good place to slow down and enjoy the island without too much noise around me. Haad Rin was the complete opposite, and that shift in mood made the stop more memorable.

Getting a bamboo tattoo there made the trip feel more personal, and the Full Moon Party was exactly the kind of wild, all-night experience people expect it to be. Bottle Beach balanced that out by showing a more remote side of Koh Phangan, which helped remind me the island is more than just one famous party scene.

Kayaking was a good way to see more of the coastline, and the beachfront spa treatment was the right way to reset after a louder night.

Phi Phi Islands: Days 17-18

Phi Phi Islands longtail boats

Phi Phi felt like one of the most photogenic stops on the route. The cliffs, the water color, and the boat trips around the islands gave it that postcard look almost everywhere I went.

Activities & Attractions

  • Visited Maya Bay
  • Snorkeled at Bamboo Island
  • Explored Monkey Beach
  • Visited Viking Cave
  • Enjoyed a sunset boat tour
  • Tried spearfishing

Maya Bay was one of those places I had seen so many times that I half expected it to disappoint me, but it did not. The cliffs and bright water made it one of the most striking places on the trip. Bamboo Island was another standout because the snorkeling there was easy to enjoy and the water looked exactly how people hope it will.

Monkey Beach was a fun stop just because of how unusual it felt to see monkeys right along the shoreline in a place that already looked so dramatic. Viking Cave added another layer to the boat day and made the stop feel like more than just beaches.

The sunset boat tour was one of the best ways to take in Phi Phi as a whole. Trying spearfishing also gave the stop something a little different and made it feel more active than just another island sightseeing day.

Phuket: Days 19-22

Phuket pier and clear blue waters.

Phuket had more range than I expected. It could be loud and nightlife-heavy in one moment, then scenic and worth slowing down for in the next. It worked best when I treated it as more than just a party stop.

Activities & Attractions

  • Relaxed on Patong Beach
  • Visited Phang Nga Bay
  • Explored the Old Phuket Town
  • Visited the Big Buddha
  • Tried scuba diving
  • Experienced Phuket’s nightlife

Patong Beach was all about energy. It was busy, full of people, and never felt slow. Phang Nga Bay was one of the biggest highlights in Phuket because the limestone formations rising out of the water gave it a completely different look from the island’s main beach areas.

Old Phuket Town was worth adding because it gave the island more character and broke up the coastal side of the trip. Walking through that part of Phuket made it feel like more than just beaches and nightlife. The Big Buddha was another stop that paid off because of the views and the sheer size of it.

Scuba diving added one more ocean-based experience to the trip, and Phuket nightlife did exactly what people expect it to do—there was always something going on.

Khao Sok National Park: Days 23-25

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park was one of the biggest highlights of the whole month. After so much island time, this stop completely changed the mood of the trip. It felt wild, scenic, and much more immersive.

Activities & Attractions

  • Explored Cheow Lan Lake
  • Hiked in Khao Sok National Park
  • Visited Coral Cave
  • Went kayaking
  • Tried fishing on the lake
  • Enjoyed wildlife spotting

Cheow Lan Lake was one of the best landscapes of the entire trip. The water, the cliffs, and the jungle-covered walls around the lake made it feel almost unreal in places. It had the kind of scenery that makes you stop talking for a minute and just look.

Hiking in the park gave me a more up-close feel for the area, and it added something beyond just admiring the lake from a distance. Coral Cave was a fun side trip and gave the stop more variety. Kayaking there was also one of the best places to do it because the setting made even a quiet paddle feel special.

Fishing slowed everything down in a good way, and the wildlife spotting gave Khao Sok even more personality. This was the stop that made the itinerary feel broader and more complete.

Ayutthaya: Days 26-27

Ayutthaya temples

Ayutthaya changed the tone of the trip again in a good way. After beaches, islands, and jungle scenery, it was nice to spend time somewhere centered on ruins, temples, and the older side of Thailand.

Activities & Attractions

  • Explored Ayutthaya Historical Park
  • Visited Wat Mahathat
  • Toured Wat Chaiwatthanaram
  • Visited the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum
  • Took a riverboat tour
  • Enjoyed local cuisine

Ayutthaya was the kind of place that worked best when I slowed down and let the setting speak for itself. Ayutthaya Historical Park made the stop worth it on its own. Walking around the old temple grounds gave this part of the trip a completely different feel from Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Wat Mahathat was especially memorable because it is one of the most recognizable places in Ayutthaya, and seeing it in person gave the whole stop more weight. Wat Chaiwatthanaram was another standout because the riverside setting made it feel dramatic without needing much else around it.

The Chao Sam Phraya National Museum added more context to everything I had seen outside, and the riverboat tour gave me another angle on the city. The local food also helped round the stop out and made it more than just a history-focused detour.

Krabi: Days 28-29

Krabi

Krabi was a strong way to close the trip before flying out. It brought back that dramatic southern Thailand coastline, but in a way that felt different from Phuket or Phi Phi. The cliffs around the beaches gave it a look that made it feel like a fitting final stop.

Activities & Attractions

  • Relaxed on Railay Beach
  • Visited Phra Nang Cave Beach
  • Explored the Emerald Pool
  • Went rock climbing
  • Took a long-tail boat tour
  • Enjoyed fresh seafood

Railay Beach was one of those places that looks exactly how people want Thailand to look. The limestone cliffs, the beach, and the water all came together in a way that made it hard not to stop and stare. Phra Nang Cave Beach had that same dramatic setting, but the cave shrine gave it a little more character.

The Emerald Pool was a good inland stop and a nice change from back-to-back beach time. Rock climbing added a completely different side of Krabi and made the stop feel more active. Even if you are not a serious climber, it adds a sense of adventure that fits the area well.

The long-tail boat tour was one of the best ways to take in the coastline, and the seafood was an easy win. Krabi felt like the kind of place that made it very hard to accept the trip was almost over.

Bangkok (Departure): Day 30

Erawan Shrine in Bangkok

Ending the trip back in Bangkok gave the whole route a nice full-circle feel. It also gave me one last chance to enjoy the city before heading home.

Activities & Attractions

  • Shopped at MBK Center
  • Visited Jim Thompson House
  • Paid respects at Erawan Shrine
  • Enjoyed a farewell dinner
  • Took a final stroll along the Chao Phraya River

MBK Center worked well for a final day because it made last-minute shopping easy and gave me one more taste of Bangkok before leaving. Jim Thompson House added something quieter and more thoughtful to the day, while Erawan Shrine felt like a meaningful last stop before departure.

The farewell dinner gave the trip a proper send-off, and the final walk along the Chao Phraya River was one of those simple moments that ended up feeling bigger because I knew the trip was done. After a month of temples, markets, islands, jungle, ruins, and beaches, it felt like the right way to end it.

Final Take On This Trip

This itinerary worked well because it kept changing at the right times. If one destination might have started to feel repetitive, the next destination brought in something different. That is what made the whole month feel full without ever feeling stale, and I highly recommend this trip for all first time visitors who are looking to do an extended trip.
