Japan In April: Cherry Blossoms, Weather, Best Things To Do, & More

Japan in April is warmer, colorful, and alive with springtime scenery. Here’s what to expect from the weather, crowds, and best things to do.

Japan In April: Cherry Blossoms, Weather, Best Things To Do, & More

April is one of the best months to visit Japan, but it is also one of the busiest. The weather is generally comfortable, cherry blossoms are still possible in many regions, and the country feels lively after winter. However, hotel demand can be high, especially in the first half of the month in major cherry blossom destinations.

Here’s what to expect when visiting Japan in April:

  • April is peak spring travel season in much of Japan.
  • Cherry blossoms are often at or near their best in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and other central areas in early April, depending on the year.
  • Northern Japan and higher elevations bloom later, so Hokkaido, Tohoku, and mountain regions are better for late-April or even early-May blossoms.
  • Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka usually have mild spring weather, but mornings and evenings can still be cool.
  • Hokkaido is much cooler than central and southern Japan, and early April can still feel more like the end of winter.
  • Kyushu is usually warmer and more springlike, with some areas moving into fresh green season after cherry blossoms.
  • Okinawa is much warmer than mainland Japan, but April is still calmer and less humid than summer.
  • Travel demand is high because of cherry blossoms, spring break, school holidays, and international tourism.
  • Hotel prices in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and other popular cities can be much higher than in winter.
  • Golden Week begins at the very end of April, and travel demand can spike dramatically around that period.
  • April is a great month for cherry blossom walks, gardens, temples, food tours, Mount Fuji views, tea ceremonies, castle parks, and day trips.
  • Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, and a light rain jacket or umbrella.

For accommodation demand, I would book Japan in April as early as possible, especially if you want to stay in Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Hakone, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, or near famous cherry blossom spots.

For early April, 4 to 6 months ahead is ideal. For late April into Golden Week, booking early is even more important because domestic travel increases.

April Is Peak Spring Travel Season In Japan

April is peak spring travel season in Japan, especially during the first half of the month when cherry blossoms are still blooming in many popular cities. This is one of those months where Japan looks exactly like the postcards: pink blossoms, temple gardens, castle parks, riverside walks, outdoor cafés, and people enjoying hanami under the trees.

The tradeoff is that April is not a secret. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Hakone, Mount Fuji areas, and famous sakura spots can all be crowded. Kyoto in particular can feel very busy around cherry blossom season because so many of its best spring sights are concentrated around temples, old streets, and scenic paths.

The second half of April can still be excellent, especially if you chase blossoms farther north or into higher elevations. It is also a good time for fresh greenery, comfortable city sightseeing, food tours, gardens, and day trips. Just be careful with the end of the month because Golden Week usually starts around late April and brings a major increase in domestic travel.

Japan Weather In April

Japan’s weather in April depends heavily on region, island, elevation, and coast. Central Japan usually feels mild and springlike, northern Japan is cooler, southern Japan is warmer, and Okinawa has a subtropical feel. You should not pack for Japan as one single climate in April because the difference between Sapporo and Naha can be huge.

Hokkaido Weather In April

Hokkaido is much cooler than most of Japan in April. In early April, it can still feel like the tail end of winter, especially in the mornings and evenings. Snow may still be visible in some areas, ski resorts may still have late-season conditions, and spring arrives later here than in Tokyo or Kyoto.

Expect:

  • Cool to cold early spring weather
  • Chilly mornings and evenings
  • Some lingering snow in mountain areas
  • Later cherry blossoms than central Japan
  • A need for a warm jacket, layers, and comfortable shoes
  • More early-spring scenery than full spring bloom in the first half of the month

Hokkaido in April is best for travelers who want a quieter, cooler version of spring. It is not the best choice if you are hoping for classic early-April cherry blossoms because Hokkaido’s sakura season usually arrives later.

Tokyo, Yokohama & The Kanto Region Weather In April

Tokyo and the wider Kanto region are usually mild and comfortable in April. Early April can still bring cherry blossoms, while mid to late April feels greener, warmer, and more settled.

Daytime temperatures are often comfortable for long walks, but you may still want a light jacket in the morning or evening. Rain is possible, so I would keep a small umbrella or packable rain jacket with you.

Expect:

  • Mild spring days
  • Cool mornings and evenings
  • Cherry blossoms possible in early April
  • Fresh greenery later in the month
  • Some rainy spring days
  • Excellent walking weather with layers

Tokyo in April is one of the best city travel experiences in Japan. The parks, rivers, gardens, and neighborhoods feel lively, and it is a great month for walking-heavy itineraries.

Kyoto, Osaka, Nara & The Kansai Region Weather In April

Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara are usually beautiful in April. Early April can be peak cherry blossom season, while mid and late April bring warmer days, green gardens, and easier temple-hopping weather.

Kyoto can feel crowded, but it is also one of the most atmospheric places in Japan during spring. Osaka is great for food and nightlife, and Nara is an easy day trip with parks, temples, and deer.

Expect:

  • Mild to warm spring afternoons
  • Cooler mornings and evenings
  • Cherry blossoms often possible in early April
  • Comfortable walking weather
  • Increasing crowds around famous temples and parks
  • Occasional rain

Kansai in April is ideal for first-time visitors because you can combine Kyoto’s temples, Osaka’s food scene, and Nara’s historic sites in one region.

Japanese Alps, Nagano, Takayama & Mountain Towns Weather In April

The Japanese Alps and central mountain towns are cooler than Tokyo and Osaka in April. Places like Nagano, Hakuba, and Takayama can still feel chilly, especially early in the month.

This region is great in April because cherry blossoms usually arrive later than in Tokyo and Kyoto, so you may be able to extend your sakura window by heading into the mountains. Some higher areas may still have snow or slush early in the month.

Expect:

  • Cool mornings and evenings
  • Mild afternoons later in the month
  • Later cherry blossoms than central cities
  • Snow still possible in higher elevations
  • Good conditions for old towns, ryokans, and mountain scenery
  • A need for warmer layers than you would need in Osaka or Fukuoka

This is one of my favorite regions for April if you want something beyond the classic Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka route.

Sea Of Japan Coast Weather In April

The Sea of Japan side of Honshu, including Kanazawa, Niigata, Toyama, Akita, and Aomori, is cooler and often wetter than the Pacific side. April brings a mix of lingering cool weather, spring rain, gardens, seafood, and later cherry blossoms depending on how far north you go.

Kanazawa is especially good in April if you want gardens, traditional districts, museums, and a slower feel than Kyoto. The weather can still be damp, so pack accordingly.

Expect:

  • Cool to mild spring weather
  • More rain than Tokyo or Osaka
  • Later cherry blossoms in some areas
  • Beautiful garden visits
  • Good seafood season
  • A need for a light rain jacket or umbrella

This region is a good April choice if you want cherry blossoms without only staying in the most crowded cities.

Hiroshima, Western Honshu & The Seto Inland Sea Weather In April

Hiroshima, Miyajima, and the Seto Inland Sea region are usually mild and pleasant in April. Early April can still be good for cherry blossoms, while the rest of the month is comfortable for history, island scenery, and walking.

This area is usually easier weather-wise than northern Japan, and it pairs well with Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, and Fukuoka.

Expect:

  • Mild spring days
  • Cool evenings near the water
  • Cherry blossoms possible in early April
  • Great walking conditions
  • Pleasant ferry trips and island visits
  • Some rainy days

Western Honshu is a strong April addition if you want history, food, and scenic variety without needing winter gear.

Kyushu Weather In April

Kyushu is warmer than central and northern Japan in April. Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Beppu, Yufuin, and Kagoshima usually feel comfortably springlike, especially by mid-month.

Cherry blossoms often peak earlier here than in Tokyo or Kyoto, so early April is your better chance for sakura. Later in April, Kyushu is more about greenery, food, hot springs, gardens, and mild weather.

Expect:

  • Mild to warm spring days
  • Comfortable evenings
  • Earlier cherry blossom timing than northern Japan
  • Great onsen weather in Beppu and Yufuin
  • Good food travel in Fukuoka
  • Less need for heavy layers

Kyushu in April is a great choice if you want a warmer spring trip with food, history, hot springs, and fewer extreme weather concerns.

Okinawa & The Ryukyu Islands Weather In April

Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands are much warmer than mainland Japan in April. This is one of the better months to visit Okinawa if you want mild to warm weather before the full heat, humidity, and typhoon concerns of summer.

April is good for beaches, snorkeling on warmer days, coastal drives, island culture, castle ruins, markets, and aquarium visits. It may not always feel like peak tropical summer, but it is much more beach-friendly than January, February, or March.

Expect:

  • Mild to warm subtropical weather
  • Warmer ocean and beach conditions than winter
  • Lower humidity than summer
  • Comfortable sightseeing
  • Occasional rain
  • A light jacket only for breezy evenings

Okinawa in April is a great contrast to mainland Japan if you want to add island scenery to a spring itinerary.

Japan Sunrise & Sunset In April

April has much better daylight than winter, which makes travel easier. You can comfortably plan full sightseeing days without feeling like sunset arrives too early.

In Tokyo, sunrise is usually around 5:30 AM at the beginning of April and closer to 4:50 AM by the end of the month. Sunset is usually around 6:00 PM at the beginning of April and closer to 6:25 PM by the end of the month.

Here’s what to expect across Japan in April:

  • Hokkaido has longer spring days but cooler temperatures.
  • Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima have excellent daylight for parks, temples, gardens, and day trips.
  • Kyushu feels warmer and more springlike, especially by mid to late April.
  • Okinawa has later sunsets and a more relaxed island feel.
  • Morning is best for famous cherry blossom spots before crowds build.
  • Late afternoon is great for golden-hour temple walks, river strolls, and city viewpoints.

For April, I would start early for the most popular sights, especially in Kyoto and Tokyo. Then save food tours, shopping streets, izakayas, night views, and illuminations for the evening.

Best Things To Do In Japan In April

April is one of the best months in Japan for outdoor sightseeing, cherry blossoms, gardens, castles, food tours, temples, Mount Fuji views, and day trips. The key is planning around timing because early April and late April can feel very different.

See Cherry Blossoms In Tokyo

April is one of the best times to enjoy cherry blossoms in Tokyo, especially in the first part of the month if the bloom timing lines up. Famous sakura spots include Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Ueno Park, Chidorigafuchi, and Meguro River.

The city gets crowded during peak bloom, but it is still worth it. Go early in the morning for quieter walks, then return at night if there are lanterns or evening lights.

For a more organized spring experience, you can join a Tokyo cherry blossom tour with a local host.

Walk Kyoto’s Cherry Blossom Paths

Kyoto in April is incredibly beautiful, especially around the first half of the month. The Philosopher’s Walk, Maruyama Park, Keage Incline, Kiyamachi Street, Arashiyama, and temple gardens can all be stunning during cherry blossom season.

The crowds can be intense, so I would not overpack your itinerary. Pick a few areas each day, start early, and leave room for slower wandering.

A good way to avoid planning every detail yourself is to take a Kyoto cherry blossom walk.

Explore Osaka Castle Park In Spring

Osaka Castle Park is one of the best places to enjoy April in Osaka. The castle, moats, open lawns, and blossoms make it a classic spring stop.

Osaka is also a great city in April because you can combine daytime sightseeing with food at night. Dotonbori, Shinsekai, Namba, and Umeda all work well after a day outside.

For the food side of the city, I’d take an Osaka food tour so you can try takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and local dishes without guessing where to go.

Visit Mount Fuji And Hakone

Mount Fuji can still look beautiful in April, especially with snow remaining on the peak. Hakone is a classic spring escape from Tokyo, with lake views, ropeways, ryokans, hot springs, and Fuji viewpoints.

April is not Mount Fuji climbing season, so this is about sightseeing rather than summiting. Weather can still block the mountain, so do not count on a guaranteed view.

From Tokyo, it is much easier to explore Mount Fuji and Hakone on a guided day trip if you do not want to manage trains, buses, and transfers yourself.

Visit Nara For Temples, Deer And Spring Walks

Nara is a perfect April day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and the old streets around Naramachi are all enjoyable in spring weather.

The deer are around year-round, but April makes the walking much more pleasant than summer. Late cherry blossoms and fresh greenery can make the park feel especially pretty.

For a more structured day, you can tour Nara, Fushimi Inari, and Arashiyama.

Experience A Kyoto Tea Ceremony

A tea ceremony is a great April activity because it gives you a calm break from the crowds and walking. Kyoto’s traditional streets and old wooden houses make the experience feel especially fitting in spring.

This is also a good rainy-day option. April weather is usually pleasant, but showers happen, and having one slower indoor cultural activity on your itinerary is smart.

You can experience a Kyoto tea ceremony in a traditional setting.

Visit Hiroshima And Miyajima

Hiroshima and Miyajima are excellent in April. The weather is usually mild, and early April can still bring cherry blossoms to parks and temple areas.

In Hiroshima, the Peace Memorial Park, Atomic Bomb Dome, and Peace Memorial Museum are essential. On Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine, the floating torii gate, Mount Misen, and the island’s walking streets make it one of the best side trips in western Japan.

To see the main highlights efficiently, you can take a Hiroshima and Miyajima UNESCO sites tour.

Explore Kanazawa’s Gardens And Old Districts

Kanazawa is a beautiful April destination because it has gardens, samurai streets, tea house districts, seafood, museums, and a slower pace than Kyoto. Kenrokuen Garden is especially popular in spring.

The weather can still be a little damp, so bring a light rain jacket. But when the weather is good, Kanazawa is one of the nicest cities in Japan for wandering.

For a more cultural experience, you can join a Kenrokuen tea ceremony experience.

Visit Takayama And Shirakawa-go

Takayama and Shirakawa-go are great in April if you want mountain towns, traditional architecture, and a slower countryside feel. Shirakawa-go can still have a cool early-spring feel, while Takayama’s old town is wonderful for strolling, food, sake breweries, and morning markets.

April also brings the Takayama Spring Festival, one of Japan’s famous seasonal festivals, if your dates line up. Lodging can fill early around festival dates.

If you are staying in Kanazawa or Takayama, you can visit Shirakawa-go on a guided tour.

See Late Cherry Blossoms In Northern Japan

If you miss peak cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, April still gives you options farther north. Northern Tohoku and Hokkaido bloom later, so late April can be a good time to chase sakura in cooler regions.

This works well for travelers who have flexibility and want to avoid only visiting the most crowded blossom spots. Hirosaki, Aomori, Sendai, and southern Hokkaido can all be worth looking into depending on the year’s bloom timing.

For travelers basing in northern Japan, you can book guided day trips from Sapporo to make regional travel easier.

Visit Okinawa For A Warm Spring Escape

Okinawa is a great April add-on if you want warmer weather, beaches, snorkeling, island culture, coastal drives, and a slower pace after mainland Japan. April is warmer than winter but not as hot and humid as summer.

This is a good month for Naha, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Cape Manzamo, Kokusai Dori, castle ruins, and beach areas. Swimming and snorkeling are more realistic than in winter, though conditions still depend on the day.

For an active island experience, you can go snorkeling in Okinawa.

Visit teamLab Planets On A Rainy Day

teamLab Planets TOKYO is a good April backup if you get rain or need a break from parks and temples. Spring weather is usually nice, but rain is always possible.

It is also a good activity if you are traveling with people who want something modern, visual, and indoors. Book ahead because April is a busy month.

You can book teamLab Planets tickets before your visit.

Take A Tokyo Food Tour

Tokyo’s food scene is excellent in April because the weather makes it easy to move between neighborhoods. Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Ueno, Asakusa, and Tsukiji are all fun areas to explore.

After long days of cherry blossoms and sightseeing, food tours are an easy way to relax and still feel like you are experiencing the city. I especially like doing food tours at night in spring because the weather is comfortable.

You can take a Shinjuku food tour to try several local stops in one evening.

Visit Himeji Castle In Spring

Himeji Castle is one of the best castle experiences in Japan, and April is one of the best times to see it. The white castle with spring blossoms and fresh greenery around it is beautiful.

It is easy to visit by train from Osaka, Kyoto, or Hiroshima, and it works well as a half-day or full-day stop depending on your route.

If you want more context while visiting, you can tour Himeji Castle with a guide.

Enjoy Spring Foods And Sakura Treats

April is a fun food month in Japan because seasonal items are everywhere. You’ll see sakura-flavored sweets, strawberry desserts, spring vegetables, bento boxes, wagashi, matcha treats, and picnic foods.

Department store food halls are especially fun in April because you can pick up a seasonal lunch and take it to a park or garden. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Kanazawa are all excellent food cities in spring.

In Osaka, you can eat through Dotonbori and Shinsekai with a local guide.
