Cost To Visit Macao: Travel Budget Guide (2026)

Macao is not the cheapest destination in Asia, but it can still be surprisingly manageable if you plan carefully.

In this guide, you’ll find the average cost to visit Macao, including daily budgets, hotel prices, food costs, transportation, attractions, day trips, and which areas of Macao are cheapest or most expensive.

Is Macao Cheap To Visit?

Macao is moderately expensive by Asian travel standards, but it does not have to be a luxury-only destination. Macao gets expensive when your trip is focused on Cotai resort hotels, upscale buffets, taxis, shows, premium spa hotels, casino dining, and last-minute weekend accommodation.

It becomes much more affordable when you stay in a simpler hotel, use buses and the LRT, explore the UNESCO historic center on foot, and mix one or two paid experiences with free sightseeing.

For many travelers, Macao stays more affordable when you:

  • Visit on weekdays instead of Friday or Saturday nights
  • Stay on the Macao Peninsula instead of only looking at Cotai resorts
  • Use public buses, LRT, and hotel shuttles instead of taxis
  • Eat at casual Cantonese, Macanese, bakery, noodle, and café spots
  • Walk the Historic Centre of Macao instead of booking a paid tour for every sight
  • Visit outside Chinese New Year, Golden Week, Grand Prix dates, Christmas, and New Year

Macao Vacation Costs

Below is a detailed expense breakdown for accommodations, food, transportation, and attractions, followed by day trip costs and realistic daily and weekly budgets.

Avg. Accommodation Cost

Peak Season

  • Budget Travelers: MOP 500–1,050 ($62–$131) per night
  • Mid-Range Travelers: MOP 1,100–2,300 ($138–$288) per night
  • Luxury Travelers: MOP 2,800–7,000+ ($350–$875+) per night

Shoulder-Season

  • Budget Travelers: MOP 380–850 ($48–$106) per night
  • Mid-Range Travelers: MOP 850–1,850 ($106–$231) per night
  • Luxury Travelers: MOP 2,200–5,500+ ($275–$688+) per night

Off-Season

  • Budget Travelers: MOP 320–700 ($40–$88) per night
  • Mid-Range Travelers: MOP 700–1,500 ($88–$188) per night
  • Luxury Travelers: MOP 1,800–4,500+ ($225–$563+) per night

Note:
Cotai, casino resorts, major events, and weekends usually sit on the higher end. Older Macao Peninsula hotels, weekday stays, and off-season dates are usually the best way to lower accommodation costs.

Budget accommodation in Macao is more limited than in many Asian destinations, so booking early matters.

If hotels are unusually expensive, compare the total cost with staying in Hong Kong and visiting Macao by ferry or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Food Cost

Budget Travelers

  • Breakfast: MOP 30–70 ($4–$9)
  • Lunch: MOP 45–100 ($6–$13)
  • Dinner: MOP 60–140 ($8–$18)

Mid-Range Travelers

  • Breakfast: MOP 70–130 ($9–$16)
  • Lunch: MOP 100–180 ($13–$23)
  • Dinner: MOP 180–350 ($23–$44)

Luxury Travelers

  • Breakfast: MOP 150–300 ($19–$38)
  • Lunch: MOP 250–500 ($31–$63)
  • Dinner: MOP 500–1,200+ ($63–$150+)

Reality: Macao food can be affordable if you eat at local cafés, noodle shops, bakeries, food courts, casual Cantonese restaurants, and Macanese comfort-food spots.

Casino resort dining, hotel buffets, fine dining, cocktail lounges, and celebrity-chef restaurants are where food costs rise fastest.

Transportation Cost

Airport → City

  • Public bus from Macau International Airport: MOP 6 ($0.75) per ride
  • LRT from the airport area to Taipa/Cotai zones: usually MOP 6–12 ($0.75–$1.50) depending on distance and ticket type
  • Taxi from airport to Cotai/Taipa: usually around MOP 40–90 ($5–$11)
  • Taxi from airport to Macao Peninsula: usually around MOP 90–180 ($11–$23)
  • Private transfer: usually around MOP 180–400+ ($23–$50+)

Getting Around Macao

Airport → City

  • Public bus is the cheapest option and works well for travelers with light luggage.
  • Taxis are useful if you arrive late, have luggage, or are staying at a hotel that is awkward to reach by bus.
  • Many casino hotels and resorts operate shuttle routes, though availability and routes can change.

Long-Distance Buses

  • Macao itself is compact, so there are no true long-distance domestic buses inside the destination.
  • Cross-border buses to Hong Kong, Zhuhai, or other nearby Pearl River Delta destinations can vary widely.
  • Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle bus between Hong Kong Port and Macao Port: often around HKD 65–70 ($8–$9) one way before any local transport on either side.
  • Private cross-border transfers can cost far more and are best treated as a convenience splurge.

Trains

  • Macao does not have a regular long-distance train system inside the city.
  • The Macao LRT is useful for some airport, Taipa, Cotai, Barra, and Hengqin-related routes.
  • LRT single-journey fares are usually MOP 6–12 ($0.75–$1.50) depending on distance.
  • With a prepaid card, LRT rides can be cheaper, often around MOP 3–6 ($0.40–$0.75) depending on the number of stations.

Local Transit

  • Public bus ride: MOP 6 ($0.75)
  • Typical daily transit spend using buses/LRT: MOP 12–40 ($1.50–$5)
  • A bus-heavy sightseeing day can stay extremely cheap if you avoid taxis.
  • Walking is practical in the historic center, but Macao’s hills, heat, humidity, and crowds can make short taxi rides tempting.

Taxis / Ride Services

  • Short taxi ride: MOP 35–80 ($4–$10)
  • Longer cross-city ride: MOP 90–180+ ($11–$23+)
  • Airport, ferry terminal, bridge port, luggage, waiting time, and late-night demand can add to the fare.
  • Taxis are convenient, but they can be hard to find during peak periods and expensive compared with buses.

Ferries / Hong Kong Transfers

  • Hong Kong ↔ Macao ferry, standard class: usually around HKD/MOP 190–245 ($24–$31) one way depending on route, day, and sailing time
  • Round-trip ferry budget: usually around $48–$62+
  • Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle: usually the cheaper option, around $8–$9 one way before local transit
  • Private Hong Kong ↔ Macao transfer: often $250–$500+ depending on vehicle, pickup, and route

Rental Car

  • Rental cars are not practical or necessary for most Macao visitors.
  • Public buses, walking, LRT, taxis, ferries, and hotel shuttles are usually easier.
  • Parking, traffic, border rules, and the compact layout make car rental unnecessary for most tourist trips.
