Argentina in May falls right in the middle of autumn, bringing noticeably cooler temperatures, shorter days, and fewer tourists than the summer months.

It can be an especially good time for Buenos Aires, Mendoza, northern Argentina, and anyone interested in seeing Patagonia as it transitions toward winter.

If you’re still deciding where to go, our guide to the [most popular places to visit in Argentina](https://www.jetsetteralerts.com/6-most-popular-places-to-visit-in-argentina-on-your-1st-visit/) can help you plan your route.

## Argentina Weather in May

May is firmly within fall in Argentina. Conditions become cooler throughout the country, although the huge distance between northern Argentina and Patagonia means the weather varies considerably.

- **Buenos Aires:** Average highs are around **66°F (19°C)** with lows near **54°F (12°C)**.
- **Mendoza:** Average highs are around **67°F (19°C)** with lows near **44°F (7°C)**.
- **Puerto Iguazú:** The north remains much warmer, with highs around **77°F (25°C)** and lows near **57°F (14°C)**.
- **Ushuaia:** Conditions are much colder, with average highs around **45°F (7°C)** and lows around **35°F (2°C)**.
- Buenos Aires averages around **3.6 inches of precipitation** during May.
- Mendoza remains much drier, averaging only around **0.5 inches of precipitation**.
- Snow becomes increasingly possible in Patagonia and higher elevations as winter approaches.

**What this means for your trip:**
May is a great month if you prefer sightseeing without summer heat. Bring layers no matter where you’re going, and pack proper cold-weather clothing if Patagonia or Ushuaia is part of your itinerary.

## Argentina Sunrise & Sunset in May

Days become noticeably shorter during May, especially in southern Patagonia.

- In **Buenos Aires**, May begins with around **10 hours and 42 minutes of daylight**.
- Sunrise is around **7:30 a.m.** and sunset shortly after **6:10 p.m.** early in the month.
- By May 31, Buenos Aires receives around **10 hours of daylight**, with sunset close to **5:50 p.m.**
- In **Ushuaia**, May begins with just over **9 hours of daylight**.
- By the end of May, Ushuaia receives only around **7½ hours**, with sunrise after **9:40 a.m.** and sunset around **5:20 p.m.**

The shorter days matter much more in Patagonia than they do in Buenos Aires. If you are visiting Ushuaia or other southern destinations, plan outdoor activities carefully around the limited daylight.

## May Is Shoulder to Low Season in Argentina

May generally falls within **shoulder to low season** for much of Argentina. The summer crowds are gone, while the winter ski season has not fully started.

- **Demand:** Tourism is generally lower than during the December-to-February summer season.
- **Pricing:** Hotels and domestic flights can offer better value than during peak summer periods.
- **Buenos Aires:** May is a comfortable time for city sightseeing, with cooler weather and manageable crowds.
- **Patagonia:** Summer trekking season has ended, and some seasonal tours, trails, or businesses may have reduced schedules as winter approaches.
- **Northern Argentina:** May is actually one of the better months for places such as Jujuy because conditions become cooler and drier.
- **Holiday weekends:** Domestic demand can temporarily increase around May 1 and May 25.
- **Booking tip:** You usually have much more flexibility than during summer, although I would still book ahead for specific hotels, flights, and must-do excursions.

## Best Things To Do in Argentina in May

May is particularly good for city sightseeing, northern Argentina, wine country, and experiencing the final stretch of autumn.

- **Explore Buenos Aires** – Cooler temperatures make May comfortable for walking through Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo, La Boca, and the historic center. Argentina’s tourism board specifically recommends fall for visiting the capital.
- **Visit Mendoza wine country** – Harvest season has ended, but wineries remain open and the surrounding landscape still has a distinctly autumn feel. Cool days and dry conditions are great for vineyard visits.
- **Explore Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca** – May is one of the better times to visit northern Argentina. The weather is typically pleasant and dry, making it easier to explore Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahuaca, and the surrounding colorful mountains.
- **Visit Córdoba** – May’s milder weather works well for exploring Córdoba’s historic center, surrounding mountains, and nearby villages without the summer heat.
- **Take a trip to the Tigre Delta** – May is comfortable for a boat ride through the Paraná Delta and makes an easy day trip from Buenos Aires.
- **See Iguazú Falls** – Temperatures are much more comfortable than they are during summer, while the subtropical landscape remains lush. Fall is one of the seasons Argentina’s tourism board recommends for Iguazú.
- **Experience autumn in Tierra del Fuego** – Ushuaia and the surrounding forests can still have beautiful fall colors, with the possibility of the first snow as winter gets closer. Keep in mind that days are short and conditions can change quickly.
