Hohe Tauern is the biggest and boldest national park in Austria, and for me it is the most awe-inspiring of the six. This is where Austria’s high-alpine beauty really shows off, with 3,000-meter peaks, hundreds of glaciers, deep valleys, and some of the grandest mountain scenery in the country. It feels huge, dramatic, and properly wild, which is exactly why it belongs at the top of any beauty-focused list.

I love how intense the landscape looks here. It is one of those parks where the rock, the water, and the scale all work together to create something visually powerful.

Kalkalpen is beautiful in a quieter, deeper way. Instead of relying on one iconic summit or famous landmark, it draws me in with forest wilderness, mountain pastures, clear streams, and heavily karstified mountain terrain. The park is known as Austria’s largest forest wilderness, and that really comes through when I picture its sea of trees stretching through the mountains. It feels peaceful, immersive, and wonderfully unspoiled.

I love that it feels like a real green wilderness sitting right beside major cities.

It protects the country’s only steppe national park landscape, with reed belts, salt ponds, open skies, and extraordinary birdlife. What I like most is how different it feels from the alpine image many people have of Austria. It is wide, calm, and full of atmosphere, especially for birdwatching and open-landscape photography.

It has a quieter, more intimate character, and I like that it feels like a hidden natural gem rather than a major showpiece destination. The “Green Canyon” label fits it well.
