## Nairobi (Days 1–2)

![Group of giraffes standing in Nairobi National Park with the Nairobi city skyline visible in the distance.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b2/5a/b25ae1cc-57ff-42d2-b189-680f1dd95ffc/content/images/2025/07/kenya-nairobi-national-park-giraffes.jpg)

I kicked off my Kenyan journey in **Nairobi**, it's capital city that’s way more than a stopover. The city has its own unique rhythm, but me be let’s be honest—**I came for the giraffes and stayed for the unexpected food scene**.

Here's what I did:

- **Giraffe Centre** – Kissed by a giraffe. Literally. These Rothschild giraffes are surprisingly graceful for being 18-feet tall.
- **David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust** – Baby elephants stomping around in red mud? Say no more. This was heart-meltingly cute.
- [**Nairobi National Park**](https://www.kws.go.ke/nairobi-national-park) – Yes, there are lions roaming within view of skyscrapers. Surreal, right?
- **Karen Blixen Museum** – “I had a farm in Africa…” Her house is frozen in time, and the views of Ngong Hills? Chef’s kiss.
- **Kazuri Beads Women’s Cooperative** – Handmade ceramic beads and heartwarming stories.
- **Kenyatta Market** – I got a haircut (don’t ask) and had some of the **best nyama choma** (grilled meat) in the city.
- **Carnivore Restaurant** – Exotic meats served like a medieval feast. Crocodile was chewy… I regretted nothing.
- [**Uhuru Park**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uhuru%5FPark) – A weirdly wonderful people-watching spot where I had an impromptu dance-off with school kids.

**Weather:** Hot and sunny during the day, with a cooling breeze at night. I wore a hat most of the time because that African sun does not mess around.

## Masai Mara (Days 3–5)

![Two male lions bonding on a dirt path in the Masai Mara during sunset, with one lion nuzzling the other.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b2/5a/b25ae1cc-57ff-42d2-b189-680f1dd95ffc/content/images/2025/07/Masai-Mara.png)

Come on… did you even go to Kenya if you didn’t do a safari in the [**Masai Mara**](https://www.masaimara.com/)? It’s **home to the Big Five**, the Great Migration, and honestly, enough “National Geographic” moments to fill my camera roll and kill my storage.

Activities:

- **Game Drives** – Lions, elephants, cheetahs, oh my! We spotted **a leopard up a tree with a gazelle eating it.**
- **Hot Air Balloon Safari** – Sunrise over the savannah with herds below? Magical. Champagne breakfast in the bush after? Divine.
- **Maasai Village Visit** – We danced, learned to make fire, and I was gifted a bracelet. Their storytelling is incredible.
- [**Mara River**](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction%5FReview-g294209-d671381-Reviews-Mara%5FRiver-Maasai%5FMara%5FNational%5FReserve%5FRift%5FValley%5FProvince.html) – Crocs and hippos doing their thing, waiting for the next wildebeest buffet.
- **Night Safari** – Eerie, thrilling, and full of eyes glowing in the dark.
- **Sundowners on the Savannah** – G&T never tasted so good.
- **Birdwatching** – Over 470 species, and I swear even the birds here are photogenic.
- **Cultural Talk by Local Naturalists** – We learned so much about conservation and the human-wildlife conflict.

**Weather:** Dry season glory! Cool mornings and blazing afternoons—layers were essential.

## Lake Nakuru (Days 6–7)

![Two white rhinos grazing on grass near Lake Nakuru in Kenya, with a flock of pink flamingos by the lake in the background.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b2/5a/b25ae1cc-57ff-42d2-b189-680f1dd95ffc/content/images/2025/07/rhino-at-Lake-Nakuru-kenya.webp)

This was my **off-the-beaten-path pick**, and WOW, what a surprise! [**Lake Nakuru**](https://www.kws.go.ke/lake-nakuru-national-park) is all about **rhinos, flamingos, and gorgeous landscapes**, with fewer crowds. A great detox after the thrill of the Mara.

What I did:

- **Lake Nakuru National Park Game Drive** – Spotted **black and white rhinos**, plus a sleepy lion pride chilling under an acacia.
- **Flamingo Watching** – Thousands of them painted the lake pink. I couldn't stop staring.
- **Baboon Cliff Viewpoint** – Stunning panoramic views, and yes, a baboon tried to steal my protein bar.
- [**Makalia Waterfalls**](https://www.lakenakurukenya.com/makalia-falls-in-lake-nakuru-national-park/) – A peaceful trail that ended at a lush waterfall. Perfect midday walk.
- **Birding Walks** – Pelicans, storks, and so many more.
- **Visit to Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site** – Learned about ancient settlements and saw some wild hyraxes running around.
- [**Nakuru Town**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakuru) – Grabbed some local snacks and chilled at a roadside café.
- **Sunset by the Lake** – Peaceful, hauntingly beautiful, and a solid “pause” moment.

**Weather:** Slightly cooler than Mara, especially in the evenings. Bring a jacket!

## Lake Naivasha & Hell’s Gate (Days 8–9)

![Hippopotamus walking through shallow water and grass near Lake Naivasha, surrounded by wetland vegetation.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b2/5a/b25ae1cc-57ff-42d2-b189-680f1dd95ffc/content/images/2025/07/Lake-Naivasha-Hippo.jpg)

Adventure time! After a few days of game drives, **I wanted to move around**. [**Lake Naivasha**](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction%5FReview-g2697619-d472318-Reviews-Lake%5FNaivasha-Rift%5FValley%5FProvince.html) gave me that mix of serene lake life and **thrill-seeking in Hell’s Gate**.

Activities:

- **Boat Safari on Lake Naivasha** – Hippos galore! They grunted, splashed, and stared us down like we owed them money.
- **Crescent Island Walk** – Giraffes and zebras **roaming freely** and no fences. Wild but peaceful.
- **Hell’s Gate National Park Bike Ride** – Insane experience! We cycled past zebras and warthogs, dodging potholes and absorbing volcanic views.
- **Fischer’s Tower Climbing** – I’m no Spider-Man but climbing that lava tower was thrilling.
- **Geothermal Spa at Olkaria** – Hot pools, minerals, and dramatic Rift Valley cliffs.
- **Elsamere Conservation Centre** – Former home of Joy Adamson (from *Born Free*) and her lioness Elsa.
- **Local Markets in Naivasha Town** – Stocked up on Kenyan coffee and crafts.
- **Sunset Picnic by the Lake** – Local wine, fresh fruit, and a view I’ll never forget.

**Weather:** Hot during the day, chilly at night. Layers were life.

## Chale Island (Days 10–14)

![Aerial view of Chale Island in Kenya, featuring turquoise ocean waters, lush greenery, and thatched beachfront villas.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b2/5a/b25ae1cc-57ff-42d2-b189-680f1dd95ffc/content/images/2025/07/Chale-Island-Diani-Beach-Kenya.webp)

I couldn’t leave Kenya without dipping into the **Indian Ocean’s turquoise glory**. [**Chale Island**](https://chaleislandresort.com/) is dreamy—**powder-white sand, palm trees**, and chill vibes. It was the perfect grand finale.

Here’s what I got up to:

- **Relaxed. A lot.** My body needed this after all the early safaris.
- **Snorkeling** – Coral reefs and dolphins playing. Unbelievable clarity.
- **Jet Skiing and Kayaking** – So. Much. Fun.
- **Swahili Cooking Class** – Coconut, tamarind, and spices galore.

**Weather:** Tropical perfection. Hot, humid, and a few short rain showers that just made the beach smell better.
